To unlock the Robot Workbench, you’ll first need to complete the first mission of the DLC. Like with all crafting in Fallout 4, Automatrons robot building needs a specific station to make the magic happen. As you hunt down mechanical enemies, you can harvest their parts to build a buddy (or a few buddies) of your own. The biggest new feature comes in the form of robot companion building.
